6 Must-Have Qualities to be a Successful Hospitality Leader

by | CAREER TIPS, INSPIRATION, INTERVIEWS | 0 comments

Great leaders empower their team to succeed together. They achieve challenging goals, take decisive actions, inspire others, and move on in spite of failure. In the hospitality industry, it takes different types of leadership qualities to help an organisation perform at its highest level. A hospitality leader’s ability to understand the value of cultivating interpersonal relationships between all staff members and guests is paramount in order to unite the team with the common goal of delivering exceptional customer service.

At Hosco, we interviewed Leading Women in Hospitality to bring you their team-management insights, advice, and opinions on what it takes to be an exceptional leader in the industry. So, what qualities do they believe are the most important?

  1. Being empathetic. The ability to recognize and share the feelings of others. Leadership isn’t about maintaining yourself at the top; it’s about being responsible for those who belong to your group. The daily practice of empathy has a positive and reciprocal effect on relationships, friendships, and in the way we treat clients and coworkers.

  2. Being a good listener. Good leaders recognize when they run into a circumstance outside of their control or an emotionally-charged situation, and take the time to listen. It’s about being level-headed to better understand your clients’ or employees’ needs; and being patient enough to rise above the fleeting emotions of the moment.

  3. Being resilient. The ability to adapt in the face of adversity. One of the essential qualities of a leader is how they display emotional strength, courage, and professionalism during hard times. Maintaining a positive attitude and a strong sense of opportunity helps a good leader find a way to move forward without getting stuck in ambiguity.

  4. Being engaged emotionally. Effective leaders need to organize, direct, and focus the team’s efforts towards a particular goal. To achieve that, they need to create a sense of direction and motivation in their people. For leaders, this means maintaining a focus on achieving goals along with high levels of demonstrated caring towards others.

  5. Being intuitive. Intuition is what makes us see ahead of the curve, generate new ideas, and communicate powerfully. An intuitive leader is not afraid to make a quick or harsh decision. They will not, however, rush into it. A good leader takes time to consider the different options before finally making the best choice for the team or organisation.

  6. Being nurturing. The word nurturing is usually associated with motherhood. It means to feed, protect, support, and encourage. When people associate it with leadership, their minds go to an entirely different place. However, the nurturing leader encompasses all the skills mentioned above. They are distinguished by their actions, their orientation towards people, their ability to communicate, dedication to a bigger vision, and reliance on their team.

Ultimately, all styles of leadership have to be effective. Some people have innate qualities that make them charismatic, but leadership traits can always be learned.
